April 14th, 2003 Preble Town Board Meeting.
Started at 8:07 with the reports. Dog, Justice and highway.
Spring cleanup May 10th and 11th. (I’ll put up a separate post on it.)
Then talked about the rec committee for a bit.
John Steger, legislator said the tower project is still in process. All the bids came in higher than on the previous bigger building. He has been volunteering for meals on wheels and seems happy with it. Still looking for county manager person. Also looking for other positions. Talking about consolidating but it will take some time due to people trying to protect their territory (Their job) Talked about Homer paying for two police forces. (I thought Homer made money on speeding tickets with theirs.) Highway signs for Little York Lake are under review… still. Waiting on the country attorney, Betty said she was promised they would be up before the season starts.
Planning Board meeting is the 24th if there is any business.
Ann Henderson: Water committee said they think the aquifer protection is the biggest but they are working on the code first. (I don’t think that is proper, I’ll look into it and let you know.) They hope to have a report soon.
Ann Henderson: Historian talked about forming a historical society and will try for a May meeting to see if more people will come out.
Nitrates in the water report came in and some are higher but not as much as a year ago and none above the danger level. The county will be sending out notices to everyone.
Betty said that people should call her if their street light is out because we get a credit from NiMo if it isn't working.
Then they talked about insurance quotes. (dull unless you're a bookkeeper) Decided to go with Bailey because it's cheaper.
Talked about an Empire Zone for Paul Bunyon and Kennedy Hardware. This gets tax credits for the business according to Don Armstrong. Betty said both are expanding and Kate made a motion to do it with Don checking it out. Passed.
Then they talked about a resolution for Seward to stop the government from passing unfunded mandates onto the local taxpayers. Or some other unfair tax burden. (Sounds like yelling at barking dogs but what the heck, worth a yell.) Talked about a letter to the state opposing such things. Don said it was worth a letter because the bigger the pile in Albany the more they will listen. Passed. Of course the state can't pass a budget but…
July 3rd fireworks, Sept 14th Antique Car Show looking for a permit and they passed it.
Letter to Donna Kraft regarding burn barrel meeting. Kate and Betty went and I guess Tully wants their burn barrels but they don't want to burn plastics etc. Same as Preble.
Accepted Tom Fox's resignation from the board. (His job moved him out of town.)
Time Warner and AT&T now called TWE or something like that.
Tabled a request to buy a new tractor.
Voted in new board member Nancy Baldwin to replace Linette Currie until years end.
Public comment: Joyce Snavlin asked if her private road signs are up but Betty said Bob Rittenhouse would not give them permission to put it on his property so hers is not up. Betty said they could not put up a sign on private property without permission. Snavlin left unhappy.
John asked why Tom's position wasn't filled tonight and Peter told him it was because he just resigned but he was sure they would have someone by next meeting.
Then they went into exec session regarding a possible NiMo claim and possible resolution and possible litigation. 8:45 PM Back at 8:52 Don said it was an audit about their NiMo bills and no action was taken so their keeping it confidential for now.
Paying bills, more dull stuff.
Adjourned at 8:57.
