InfoWorld: Microsoft to trim Longhorn ambitions
SAN FRANCISCO - Microsoft Corp. is sacrificing some features it planned for Longhorn as it works to deliver its first beta of the next Windows client next year, a company spokesman said.Longhorn is the next version of Windows that is supposed to bring it up to speed against the Mac's OSX operating system. Of course, by the time they get it done OSX will have evolved beyond what it is today. It will likely take Microsoft many years to catch up. Meanwhile Linux, a Unix based OS much like Mac OSX is coming on very strong. Windows will still dominate in volume even if it cannot compete in quality, as it has always been. There is nothing you can do on your PC that I can't do on my Mac. However, there is much I can do on my Mac that you cannot do on your PC. Including running all of your PC programs. Buy a Mac, you'll never regret it.
