Minnesota Senate Recount, Update XVI

Posted in News at 11:25 pm

Minnesota Senate Recount, Update XVI:

Earlier today, Minnesota’s Canvassing Board certified the results of the Senate recount, with former comedian Al Franken holding a 225-vote lead. The Coleman campaign immediately announced that it will file an election contest tomorrow.

The status of the recount has been widely misreported and widely misunderstood. Under Minnesota law, the post-election process has three stages: canvassing, in which the returns from the precincts are tabulated and clerical errors in reporting results are corrected; recount, in which the ballots that were cast on election day are hand-counted; and contest, in which disputes about what ballots should be counted and any other disagreements are resolved. So far, only two of the three stages have been completed. The resolution of disputed issues remains.

Coleman’s contest of the returns so far is not, as some have claimed, a “sore loserman” tactic. There are highly legitimate issues surrounding the election which have not yet been addressed by any body. Those issues, some of which appear highly meritorious, will be considered for the first time in the election contest. …

There is a lot more to this issue if you click the link. But in my experience democrats are much more able to steal elections than republicans. Perhaps it’s part of their nature to cheat and they do it well.

Player Piano Roll Production Ceases

Player Piano Roll Production Ceases:

boustrophedon writes

“The Buffalo News reports that QRS Music Technologies halted production of player piano rolls 108 years after the company was founded in Chicago. QRS continues to make digitized and computerized player-piano technology that runs on CDs. ‘We’re still doing what we always did, which is to provide software for pianos that play themselves. It’s just the technology that has changed. But I would be lying to say [the halting of production] doesn’t sadden me,’ said Bob Berkman, the company’s music director. Piano rolls can last for decades, but not forever. Volunteers at the International Association of Mechanical Music Preservationists build piano-roll scanners to scan rolls optically and convert them to MIDI files. The IAMMP archive and others contain thousands of scanned rolls.”

Obama’s Health Care Resolutions Can’t Be Kept

Posted in News at 4:50 pm

FOXNews.com - Obamas Health Care Resolutions Cant Be Kept - Opinion:

Beware a politician’s promises.

In his pursuit of national health care reform, President-elect Barack Obama has repeatedly promised Americans two big things:

– that if they like the health insurance they have today, nothing will change, and

– that his health reform plan will save the typical American family $2,500 annually in health care costs.

Yet, if Obama sticks with the health proposals he has outlined so far, it is highly unlikely that either of these promises can be kept. And that’s putting it charitably. …

Well, surprise, surprise. Tell me it ain’t so… Hell, I told you this months ago…

Even as white Democrat Senate leaders continued to challenge his appointment to the seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama, a black man, Roland W. Burris, also a black man, headed to Washington on Monday, setting the stage for a public showdown with white democrat senators on Capitol Hill.

Don’t ya just love it. Meanwhile those same white democrats are eager to seat a former clown who just happens to be white. Ah, the irony…

I finally got around to mowing today. It was that or paint the picture window frame. The lawn down here is different from up north. I think it’s mostly zoysia which is not well loved due to it turning brown in the fall. At the moment that doesn’t bother me, it’s the other grass with it that is growing and making it look shabby. Plus, to be honest I really wanted to grind up the few leaves there are that keep blowing into my carport. And as a side benefit I can write this… that I was mowing in my t-shirt because it was hot in the sun even though it was a cool 66 out. But what really wiped me out was dragging the old bath tub to the curb for the guy to pick up. But all is done now and I’ll paint the window tomorrow, not as warm as today, high 40’s, but warm enough to paint.

But cheer up my CNY buddies, the weather report says it might go above freezing later in the week… I’m pulling for you.

Gee, I enjoyed writing that… ;-)

The Honeymoon: Over Before It Began!:

Many liberals have what strikes me as a touching faith that the election of Barack Obama will cause America to be better loved by people around the world, including those who are ideologically hostile to the United States. They take seriously the idea that the fact that George Bush is hated in some precincts, and his likeness is a staple of anti-American demonstrations, tells us something about Bush rather than about the people who dislike our country.

So I confess to some satisfaction in seeing Obama’s likeness paraded at a hate rally in Jakarta, along with those of Maburak and Olmert. The protesters were blaming Obama for Israel’s attack on Hamas, when he hasn’t even been inaugurated yet!

Note the cigarette; a nice touch, I think! Many liberals enjoyed the disgusting attacks on President Bush by anti-American critics around the world. It will be interesting to see how they react when Obama is the target.

Wi-Fi, Like, Totally Messes With My Chakras - New Age UK town says Wi-Fi is making them sick…:

There’s no scientific evidence that Wi-Fi is a health hazard, but that hasn’t stopped those who believe otherwise from trying to stop Wi-Fi deployment, usually citing non-existent evidence. Teachers have sued schools to derail installs, while angel guidance consultants have launched campaigns against Wi-Fi in their free time. The Wi-Fi health weirdness has been just as pronounced in the UK, where the town of Glastonbury, renown for its new age proclivities, has decided to remove Wi-Fi because they believe Wi-Fi is responsible “for upsetting positive energy fields of the body, which are known as chakras, and positive energy fields of the earth, which are known as ley lines.”

Can Media Be Legally Liable For Worsening Economic Crisis?

Can Media Be Legally Liable For Worsening Economic Crisis?:

If exaggerated reports of global economic distress act to further dampen consumer confidence and actually worsen the situation, can press outlets be held legally liable?

Such was espoused by a corporate lawyer Thursday in response to a poll that found 77 percent of Americans “think the financial press is making the economic crisis worse by projecting fear into people's minds.”

As reported by Breitbart New Years day (h/t Hot Air headlines):

The survey question: “Do you think the financial press is making the economic crisis worse by projecting fear into people's minds?” While the overall response indicated that 77% of Americans answered YES, here are highlights of note: Household Incomes: $25k - $35k — 79% answered YES $35k - $50k — 88% answered YES $50k - $75k — 76% answered YES $75k - more — 78% answered YES Demographics: 85% of young adults (18-24 yrs old) answered YES 77% of males and females alike answered YES 65% of blacks answered YES

Richard L. Scheff, a national expert on corporate liability and white collar crime issues, warns media that they could potentially be exposed to liability despite apparent constitutional protections:

“Although statements by the media are protected by the First Amendment, the survey results demonstrate that the public believes that the press bears some responsibility for the lack of confidence in the economy. One would hope that the media would act less out of self-interest in these times of national crisis,” said Mr. Scheff, vice chairman and partner with Philadelphia-based law firm Montgomery McCracken Walker & Rhoads.

Fascinating.

This all started when Harry Reid, dem senate leader, said we were in a recession well over a year ago when we clearly were not in a recession. Reid, and the dems/media wanted to create bad economics to help get a dem elected president. As usual they overdid it and now we really are in bad financial times. The press now screams at the rooftops that it will be TWO years before we come out of it. I had thought that the press would find things getting better shortly after January 20th but now I wonder if they are all in a race to the bottom and to hell with the country. Nothing new there as the MSM always puts their own interests before those of the country or anyone else. The best advise is to ignore them, nothing they say is the truth and it’s all designed to rile you up and watch them more. BREAKING NEWS never is. Don’t waste your time.

Google Tells Users To Drop IE6

Google Tells Users To Drop IE6:

Kelly writes

“Google is now urging Gmail users to drop Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) in favor of Firefox or Chrome. Google recently removed Firefox from the Google Pack bundle, replaced it with Chrome, then added a direct download link for Chrome on Google and YouTube. Google’s decision to list IE6 as an unsupported Gmail browser does not affect just consumers: Tens of thousands of small- and mid-sized businesses that run Google Apps hosted services may dump IE6 as well. What’s especially interesting is the fact that Mozilla is picking up two out of three browser users that Microsoft surrenders.”

Best advice for 2009

When I was a young boy my mother taught me many things, as did my father and brothers. But after careful consideration I think the most valuable thing I learned was from my buddy who lived next door. Sometimes the simplest advice can be a metaphor for a happy life. With a painful look on his face and a handful of snow in his hand he said, “Don’t eat yellow snow.”

Hamas H.Q. Bombed; Power Line, too

Hamas H.Q. Bombed; Power Line, too:

Talk about disproportionate response. Just an hour or so after Power Line posted a series of videos from the Israeli Defense Forces–videos that, as Scott discovered, YouTube had pulled–we experienced a Denial-of-Service attack from a cabal of a half-dozen servers in the U.S. The attack sought to make Power Line and the videos we are hosting inaccessible by overloading our server. Our data center promptly registered the attack, and then defeated it by placing Power Line behind an advanced computer called a Cisco Guard. This device recognize malicious Internet traffic and defeats it.

Here, in rough strokes, is what a DOS attack looks like:

plband123008.png.jpg

Yet it does not strike one as quite right that Islamists can will good content out of existence, does it? So we’ve placed the IDF videos on a Content Delivery Network, which is a network of hundreds of computers throughout the world. When you click on a video, the version nearest you will be delivered to your computer. This will make these videos, and all future PL videos, very easy to watch. The decentralized nature of the network will make them difficult to attack.

And, thanking our assailants for the motivation, here is another action film that the IDF provided to us. It displays the Hamas Government Headquarters in Gaza, which became the receiving end of the IAF’s “Operation Cast Lead.” In the same bombing run on which the smuggling tunnels were destroyed, so was this.

JOHN adds: Thanks to Joe as well as our data center for their expert technical assistance.

I still think man-made climate change is a con

Posted in News at 2:39 pm

Environment minister Sammy Wilson: I still think man-made climate change is a con - Environment, News - Belfasttelegraph.co.uk:

Spending billions on trying to reduce carbon emissions is one giant con that is depriving third world countries of vital funds to tackle famine, HIV and other diseases, Sammy Wilson said.

The DUP minister has been heavily criticised by environmentalists for claiming that ongoing climatic shifts are down to nature and not mankind.

But while acknowledging his views on global warming may not be popular, the East Antrim MP said he was not prepared to be bullied by eco fundamentalists.

“I’ll not be stopped saying what I believe needs to be said about climate change,” he said.

“Most of the people who shout about climate change have not read one article about it

“I think in 20 years’ time we will look back at this whole climate change debate and ask ourselves how on earth were we ever conned into spending the billions of pounds which are going into this without any kind of rigorous examination of the background, the science, the implications of it all. …

It may take awhile but eventually everyone will agree with me. Algore will be rich and the world poorer for it and that’s a pity but the old saying still applies. “You can fool some of the people all of the time and you can fool all of the people some of the time but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.”

Opinion: Minnesota Recount Folly

Posted in News at 2:34 pm

Opinion: Minnesota Recount Folly - WSJ.com:

Sorry Minnesota, but the sequel is never as good as the original.

For those who watched the Washington State governor’s race recounts in 2004, the ongoing recount drama in Minnesota is just another rehash of the same script — albeit for a U.S. Senate seat that might put Democrats one vote away from a filibuster-proof majority.

Four years ago in Washington, Democratic Party candidate Christine Gregoire lost the first count, lost the recount, and then won a second, highly dubious recount by 133 votes. In Minnesota, where Sen. Norm Coleman is defending his seat against comedian-turned-candidate Al Franken, the first count showed Mr. Coleman up 725 votes. Today, thanks to another dubious recount, Mr. Franken is apparently in the lead. …

The simple truth is that democrats are much better at stealing elections than republicans. It helps to do this if you don’t have principles.
