Dear
Republican National Comittee:
The Republican Committee in Cortland County is a dismal
failure!
I dont know what they do at their meetings but one thing
is sure
they havent done enough to elect Republicans!
The last few elections in Preble
have made me aware of the local situation. I first attended
a Republican caucus in 1997, if my memory is correct and I
was surprised when the Republicans nominated Democrats. I
wondered why they didn't just leave the positions vacant rather
than put in a Democrat. Since then I've become aware of the
behind the scenes reasons for doing this. In general, it is
to keep those voters in the dark who are not paying close
attention about what is going on. However, the countywide
scene is beyond me. As a Republican I assumed, perhaps naively,
that if the legislature had a Republican majority, as it should
considering the numbers, perhaps we would not have the fiscal
irresponsibility that led to the outrageous 20% property tax
increase this year. I would like to think that but after watching
our local politicians at work I cannot say that for sure.
After all, the 2001 Republican controlled Preble town government
raised our property taxes an additional 12.6% for a combined
increase of 32.6%!
In my opinion it seems that the
government in Cortland is dysfunctional at best. What form
of fiscal irresponsibility would lead to a walloping 20% tax
increase? I don't know the details and I don't have to know.
All you or I have to do is look at the results to make a determination.
In the legislature the Republicans
should have ALL the seats! After all, there is a Republican
majority of monumental proportions. At the very least it should
be a very clear majority of Republicans. In reality it is
the exact opposite. How could this happen? The Republican
Party has a committee called the Republican Committee that
has at its core the responsibility of finding people to run
for office and then getting them elected. With just 6 of the
19 legislators Republican one wonders if the Republicans could
have done better if the committee did not exist at all! There
is no explanation for how this could happen. At the very least
the ratio should be what the population is. That would make
42% or 8 legislators Republican. 31% Democrat would be 6.
*Divide the remaining 5 in that proportion and you should
have 11 Republican and 8 Democrat. Instead it is just 6 Republican
and 13 Democrat!
Those responsible for this would
get a 50 on their report card and a big 'F'
for failure. That is why I say the Republican Committee is
a dismal failure. By what form of rational reasoning could
we conclude otherwise? Somebody should be held responsible
for this failure and blaming me for bringing it up is blaming
the messenger for the message. There are those who would do
that and they are easy to find, just look for people with
their heads in the sand and their butts in the air like an
ostrich!
In order for our government to
work it has to represent the people fairly. Therefore there
should be representatives in government proportional to the
population. We do not have that and something should be done.
* The reason for dividing the
remaining 5 is because only Republicans or Democrats have
a reasonable chance of winning an election. The 27% registered
voters who are not Democrats or Republicans do not and cannot
get anyone elected. At least they haven't so far as I know.
Because of this the Republican 42% becomes an effective 58%
and the Democrat 31% becomes an effective 42%.
