FLASH!
The Cortland Standard is
getting ready to seriously consider possibly getting someone
to maybe think about making a call to Wal-Mart. They would
have called earlier but they had a failure in their telecommunications
system. (The string broke.) They say they must get
confirmation from Wal-Mart about top-secret plans Wal-Mart
never talks to the press about before they can report this
now very old story. It appeared here
first and later in the Syracuse
Post Standard (A 'real' newspaper.)
Let's get serious.
Do they really expect Wal-Mart
to confirm this or is this just a ruse to avoid doing the
story? How history would have changed if Woodward and Bernstein
worked at the Cortland Standard instead of the Washington
Post. In cities like Cortland, with only one newspaper, it
is the obligation of that paper to report the news fairly
and evenly. If for whatever reason that newspaper only reports
part of the news then it is no different than distorting or
lying about the news. Our constitution protects the freedom
of the press because a free press reporting on and keeping
an eye on our leaders is what keeps and protects us from harm.
When a newspaper operating with the trust of the public misuses
that freedom then we all lose.
