Song Mountain Flood Pictures Here is a look upstream (South) from the 'bridge' on Lake Road. All of these pictures were taken about an hour after the flood started and a half hour before it stopped.
Turning left (to the west) from the picture above. This shows what is left of the loose dirt fill that was put in a few weeks ago after the first flood. As you can see from the level of the water at the time of this picture the fill would not have stopped the flood. In the lower left corner of the picture you can see where the water ran under the guard rail. Still looking west but now at the end of the guard rail you can see the junk to the left and in the distance where the people are standing in the road. I'm told the water was 2 feet deep rushing across the road at the height of the flood. The red trailer holds the remains of the basement while it is undergoing remodeling from the first flood. Water was four feet deep in the basement after the first flood. Standing near the driveway with the red trailer and looking north west. The poor owner surveys the mess in his driveway. The flood washed across the grass so fast that it 'combed' it flat. Looking North down the driveway you can see the deep ruts (about 1 foot deep) in the driveway. The silt in the driveway is about 3 inch's deep. You can see the water all over the yard. Talking with the owners I found out that no one has approached them about this problem. Neither Max Stoker who 'channeled' the creek several years ago or Song Mountain who now 'owns' the creek. This is the same house who's well was contaminated with ecoli from Song Mountain some years ago and they haven't heard a peep from Song about that either. The DEC hasn't been heard from either. About the only thing we have heard is that ZBA chairman Dan O'Shea cast the deciding vote to allow Song Mountain to put another 60 million gallons of water in the form of snow on the mountain each year. I wonder if Dan O'Shea or Max Stoker or any of those guys will stop by and help these poor people out when the flooding comes back each spring? 6/27/2000 |
