Flying J would be welcome in Preble if they
just followed our laws.
We are a small community of about 1,500 people
with about 500 homes and farms. About two years ago representatives
from Flying J with their lawyers Rick Shafer and Amanda
Shaw proposed a truck stop in Preble. They were given a
copy of Preble's Land
Use Plan and
Zoning Ordinance books. "These are our laws for
Preble", we said, "follow them and you will be
welcome."
Since then every proposal from Flying J has
NOT followed those laws, indeed they broke them. When our
town told Flying J they had to follow our laws they sued
us. When we won that lawsuit, they broke the same law again,
and when we refused that, they sued
us again.
It is Flying J itself, not Preble, nor any
of its citizens that is stopping Flying J from building
here. The clear fact is that _IF_ Flying J submits
a plan that obeys ALL of our laws we could NOT
prevent them from building here!
Why is Flying J not following our laws?
They want to build a truck stop in Preble
that is bigger than
the amount of land they want to buy!
Their design is simply too large. This fact is not Preble's
fault. You can't put ten pounds of meat in a one-pound bag.
Nor is this about truckers. Preble currently
has a rest area on Route 81 that serves truckers which is
now being enlarged to accommodate even more truckers. We
are not opposed to that. The design for that rest area is
in accordance with established laws and is properly sized.
Flying J would be well advised to look into that and follow
suit.
Our laws are there for all to follow. Whether
you are a lawyer remodeling a camp or a big rich Utah company
with 'deep pockets' does not give you the right to violate
our laws!
Don't blame us for enforcing them.
