Tripe a la Mode By Charles Krauthammer

The insufferable French are at it again...

"The problem was not so much the war itself, but the fact that it was launched without U.N. approval," Colombani explains.

Rubbish. The Kosovo war was launched without U.N. approval and France joined it. Only two wars have ever been launched with U.N. approval: the Korean War (an accident of the Soviets having walked out of the Security Council on another matter) and the Persian Gulf War.

It is touching to hear such legalistic objections to deposing a man who has killed more Muslims than any person on Earth -- particularly when the objection is offered from a pose of superior international morality from a country whose commandos once blew up a Greenpeace ship monitoring French nuclear tests in the South Pacific.

Dafoe presses for answers on nitrates

That is the headline in Wednesday’s Cortland Standard (3/10/04 pg 3) and when you read the article it sounds like Mr. Dafoe (D-Homer) is being a good legislator and pressing the health department hard for answers. As least that’s how it looks on the surface but what does it look like when you dig a little deeper? If you read the letter from Bill Lewis below, you will see him telling about following manure trucks coming from the Farme area in, are you ready? HOMER. What’s funny, at least to me, is that the reason, or the main reason, we have a nitrate problem in Preble is the huge amount of liquid manure that comes to us from HOMER! One could then ask Mr. Dafoe why, if he was so concerned about the high nitrates in Preble, why he doesn’t do something about the source of those nitrates right in HIS OWN BACKYARD!

I love the little two-step politicians do when they want to avoid responsibility for a problem. Mr. Dafoe’s district creates the nitrate-ridden manure that is shipped to Preble and piled high and deep on our fields. Those nitrates then pollute our water and will someday leech back down to Homer and Mr. Dafoe complains to the Health Department as to why they aren’t doing enough to correct the problem. You gotta love this guy!

But what about those farmers who leased their fields to Farme in the first place? It seems to me that we could easily stop this problem if those farmers just canceled their leases with Farme and let Farme dump somewhere else. Now that sounds like a very simple solution to our problem. The only problem with this idea is money. What money you ask? The money Preble farmers get from Farme, they would have to give that up. But isn’t the small amount of money they get from Farme and others worth it to save our water supply. Can these farmers be so greedy that they would risk the health of their neighbors for a little money?

I guess we’ll find that out won’t we?

Legislature roster | County roster

A note from our neighbor.

Dear Frank:

This may not be of a surprise, but the other day I was just starting to turn down Steger Road from Preble Road when a manure truck I presume loaded with liquid cow manure was just rounding the corner heading up the Otisco Valley Road. As I proceeded down Steger Road heading south I caught up with another manure truck heading south. I passed the stinking truck that was splashing wet crap from the tires as it drove down the road. Literary, the manure remnants, was dripping off of the truck's wheels, tires and wheel wells. As I passed the truck and merged on to Route 281, I met another manure truck just passed the Little York Park entrance heading north. I presume this was going to wherever towards Preble. As I got to the Little York Store area, yet another truck was turning east down towards Route 11. My thoughts were pardon the pun "Holly Shit" what the hell. Again pardon the pun this is "BULL SHIT", they are taking all that shit to Preble. I said to myself, I bet they are emptying the tank from that large farm on Route 11 which is in the Town of Homer and bringing it to Preble for our enjoyment. As disturbing as that was, I was in Cortland for about 2 1/2 hours and retracing my journey, back when I again ran into more trucks turning north onto Steger Road while another truck was heading back south. These traffic of loads manure runs were most likely happening all afternoon. Now that is allot of crap considering the size and capacity of these tanker trucks.

My god, what have we all let happen.
We should not have to smell the stench or dodge manure splashing from vehicles. I know I live in a predominately rural farm area, but does the lively hood of some farmer have to effect those of us who do not prefer or particularly enjoy smelling or sharing the by products on our roads and vehicles of the waste generated by a cows happy meals.

I know that in the summer time that whole town smells so bad from the stench of manure it almost bring tears to your eyes.
Some days are so bad that it is almost sickening. I am sometimes embarrassed and ashamed to have some strangers and friends come into this town and comment on how bad the whole town literally stinks. Wow, neighbors and friends, what can we do to stop this "shit" from continuing? How could we the people of the Town, County and State allow or even condone this practice knowingly the potential and health hazardous associated with this waste material in the amounts being placed over our only sole source water and allow it continue to pollute our aquifer?????? Nitrates found in the test samples through out the area, have proven that these excessive nitrates are entering our ground water. "From what?" some say,"AH DUH" Look around at the blacken farmers fields covered with smelly cow crap and Oh by the way smell the fresh air. I am sure everyone could agree the amount being deposited in the area is totally ridiculous and that the effect maybe far reaching to us, our children and future generations.

I was raised in this Town and was used to the occasion smell of cow manure, but over the last couple of years it has gotten so bad it is ridiculously out of hand. People from out of town say, "Oh my god how do you stand the smell?" I just say, Yeah, ain't it great all this great country fresh air. And oh by the way don't drink the water, it has got too many nitrates in it. Here have a Pepsi instead.

Nitrate fed welfare whores

Pardon me while I vent my anger and frustration about what is happening, or not happening, with the 'nitrate problem' in Preble.

There isn't anyone in County government who will do anything about this problem. Why? You ask? Because if you lined them all up against the wall you would have to use a microscope to find any balls in the bunch. They are all afraid of losing their jobs, afraid of losing their promotion. After all they meet in the GRANGE for crying out loud. The head of the stupidly called "Water Protection Committee" is a farmer and just about everyone on that committee is a farmer or controlled by farmers or employed by farmers. They, all of them know how to fix this problem. Their buddies, the farmers, would have to stop polluting the land, air and water with manure and they know that won't happen.

You know I used to think that farmers were the salt of the earth, the true purists who worked the land with their bare hands to provide food for the world. My Uncle Tim was like that, a farmer that I used to spend summers with on his farm. He worked hard, he was poor but he and my Aunt Adelaide raised 5 children who grew up to be good people. He wasn't on welfare like farmers today. He didn't get a huge tax break on his land, he didn't get money from you and me not to grow food. He didn't get million dollar grants not to do something with his land he wasn't going to do anyway. He worked for every cent he had and I was proud of him for that. But these farmers today who live off the government, who don't pay taxes their neighbors have to make up, who get all kinds of government subsidies. These guys are not the salt of the earth of old. These guys are leeches who don't earn what they have, who take money from the government as if it was owed them. They truly are the welfare whores of today and they have nothing to be proud of.

But the saddest thing is that nothing will stop them. They will continue to pollute the land, air and water, they will continue to take free money from the government and they will continue to destroy Preble and points south. They will do this because no one has what it takes to stop them. Everyone in Cortland, who is in a position to do so, is a coward, afraid for their job, afraid just because they were hired to be afraid. And it's not just the town or county level, hell it's not even the state level. It goes to the top with my guy Bush, who I voted for and will again, signing the biggest welfare farm bill ever in the hope of getting reelected. All of the pols do this. They give our money to the special interests and the special interests give our money back to them to run for office.

And in Preble the poorest of the poor drink contaminated water, smell putrefied air and walk on tainted land.

And nobody does nothing and nobody ever will and the cycle goes on, down and down we go into the pits of hell. Or in this case the manure drenched fields of Preble.

LIBERAL TALKRADIO NETWORK TO LAUNCH MARCH 31

“Our success to date proves what we have known all along: a progressive radio network can be entertaining and engaging while also being a successful business venture. We have made a lot of progress…and more is to come. We expect to deliver valuable listeners to our advertising partners,” said Evan Cohen, New York-based investor and Chairman of the board of Air America Radio
What am I missing here? It hasn't started yet she claims that it is a "successful business venture". In any case I'm glad the liberals finally have their own radio network so they won't be limited in getting their views across. Other than CNNNBCNRPMSNBCCNBCABCCBS and almost all the mags and newspapers in the country.

Peter Kirsanow on Florida & Election 2004

Florida Forever
The political urban legend that facts won't kill.

The consequences of generating suspicion of the electoral process for the sake of partisan advantage are at once insidious and profound. They dangerously undermine the legitimacy of government and encourage rejection of its authority.

The myth is poisonous to society and democracy. Its antidote is a relentless, adamant repetition of the truth.

Peter Kirsanow is a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.
This article discusses the truth about Florida 2000, and truth does not serve well those whose hearts are filled with irrational hate.

BURN BARREL AND TOWN BOARD MEETING AUDIO

Public Comment on Burn Barrel 3/8/04 audio

00:14:00 My suggestion to compromise on burn barrels.

00:15:30 I apologize to Peter (Knapp) But I misspoke. I meant to say that outdoor furnaces pollute as much as burn barrels but what I said was that outdoor furnaces pollute as much as indoor furnaces. I was referring to wood burning furnaces in both cases. Because outdoor wood burning furnaces do not have to comply with pollution standards the same as indoor wood burning devices they would pollute as much as a burn barrel when burning the same stuff. Still not a good thing, but I was wrong and I apologized to Peter for my error.

I suggested that the Town Board could create a very simple ordinance that would say:

Burn barrels are prohibited within 300 feet from any adjacent property line unless the owner(s) of property within that 300 feet gave their permission.
This would put the onus on the burner to get permission from their neighbors to burn. What the town board lack of a ruling does is force the victim to complain to the DEC about the burning, effectively shutting most victims up. The presumption made by the board is that most people are good neighbors and would make sure their neighbors approved of the burning. If this worked we would not be having these meetings. But it is all moot as the town board managed to get a lot of people out to oppose any change in the law and they even got 130 signatures on a petition to oppose it. By doing nothing they appease the burners and leave the rest choking in the wind.
